Sunday Round-up

My round-up of news, events and stuff and nonsense from the last days.
If it’s news to me, it must be news to you!‘

Fashion victims: Fashion designer Christopher Kane’s latest creation are shoes made out of sponge. And despite costing £800 a pair they’re selling like hot cakes. Mind you, not as daft as $530 pre-scuffed and taped sneakers.

A penny for them: £1,000 worth of pennies were stolen from an artwork in Cambridge. But the artist hailed this a success as it ‘was there for people to interact with as they saw fit’.

Don’t mess with technology: The man who programmed his video doorbell to lock his front door if it saw a face it didn’t recognise found himself locked out of his own home when it failed to recognise him, focussing instead on the face of Batman on his t-shirt.

Gordian knot: Five young squirrels in Wisconsin had to be sedated so that they could be freed from each other after their tails got entangled with each other.

Way to go: Among the winners at the Ideal Death Show in Bournemouth were the makers of a ‘lovingly crafted Viking ship, complete with sail, shield and an ash urn to give your loved one a send-off you won’t forget’.

No f-in Pacific: Cathay Pacific had to send one of its planes back to the workshop after managing to spell its own name incorrectly.

Marriage lines: Weddings are a big and expensive deal these days and guests get understandably peeved by some of the rules of the ceremony (or seramony as the coordinator spells it).

At last! Donald Trump is behind bars, or at least his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been, put there by the artist Plastic Jesus.

Cheers: The residue of 13,000-year-old beer has been found in what is the world’s oldest brewery in a prehistoric cave in Haifa, Israel.

Brief lives: Actor Dudley Sutton who played Tinker Dill in Lovejoy; Ipswich and England defender Kevin BeattieEnzo Calzaghe father and trainer of boxer Joe Calzaghe; European golf champion Celia Barquín Arozamena; the grandfather of post-modern architecture Robert Venturi; Chas Hodges from Chas and Dave; the first woman to run a sub-five-minute mile Diane Leather and; comedy writer and host of It’ll Be Alright on the Night Denis Norden author of the best film one-liner.
